These instructions will show you how to connect to a networked office printer via IP address for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Devices connected via USB do not need to be added using this method.

If your printer has multiple users connected, you will need to use the instructions on how to connect to a shared network printer. Please refer to those articles instead. If you have any questions about your printer, please email engr-helpdesk@tamu.edu for assistance.

On Windows

...

  1. Type Printers & scanners. It should autocomplete, so into the Windows search bar and press Enter to open the appapplication

  2. Click the Add Printer a printer or Scanner scanner at the top of the page. A long list of networked printers will show up, scroll

  3. Select the Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname option and click Next

  5. Use the recommended setting and click Next

  6. Change Edit the printer name if you prefer to use something easier to remember and desired and then click Next

  7. The printer will install. You can print Print a test page if you want to make sure it is connectconnected, then click Finish.

On Mac

  1. Open System Preferences and go to select Printers & Scanners

  2. Click on the + button icon in the bottom left - hand side of the Printers field.& Scanners pop up window

  3.  Select Click on the IP option tab and enter the following information for the printer:

    1. Address: IP address of your printer

    . Some options will automatically fill.

    2. Protocol: Line Printer Daemon Protocol.

    3. Enter your preferred name in the Name field.

    4. Optional: Enter a room number in the Location field.

  4. Click Add to add the printer.

  5. If MacOS macOS is unable to determine the exact configuration of your printer, it will ask you a few questions about what hardware configurations the printer has (e.g. tray options/, duplex printing/, etc.). Select the appropriate options. If you are unsure, you can leave the options unchecked.

On Linux

  1. Press the Windows key on the keyboard to open the search menu

  2.  Type “printer” printer and open the Printers appapplication

  3.  On Ubuntu 18.04, click

    on “Printers”

    Printers next to

    “Settings”

    Settings, then click the

    “Additional Printer Settings” button

    on the Additional Printer Settings… icon

    1. If you get a prompt for the root password, click Cancel to ignore it.

  5. Enter the IP address of the printer in ipp://1.1.1.1 format in the Enter device URI field

  7. Enter the printer name, description, and location if desired

     
  8. Print a test page to confirm you are connected , and then click Done.
