Build your home page layout
There are three ways you can build your home page:
Showing a single page.
Showing your most recent news (blog) posts.
Using the Front Page widget areas (sidebars) to build a modular layout. If you use any of the three Front Page widget areas, they will REPLACE your front page Reading Settings.
News
Your site will come with a single page set to display as the home page under Settings > Reading. To change it to display your news instead, visit this settings page and change the Front page displays option to Your latest posts.
Front Page Widgets
There are three rows of Front Page widgets available. These three rows will automatically arrange your widgets into preset layouts depending on the number of widgets present. A single widget will take up the full page width; two will be split into halves; three will be split into thirds.
With the full-width Featured Content area, this gives you up to four rows in which to build your home page grid.

Make a widget visible on select areas of the site
Each widget’s controls should include a Visibility button. If you don’t see it, make sure the Jetpack plugin is installed and its Widget Visibility module is activated.
Pressing the Visibility button will show you a number of options for selectively showing (or hiding) the widget. You can choose to show it only on a certain post type, on a particular page, or on your search results. You can combine multiple options to make sure your widget shows up only where you want it.
Override widget areas on specific pages
Widget areas for the whole site are defined in Appearance > Widgets. You can override them on individual pages if you wish. (To limit the visibility of individual widgets, use the Widget Visibility settings instead of creating a whole new sidebar.)
On the page that needs a different widget area, use Screen Options to turn on the Per Page Widgets box if it is hidden. In the Per Page Widgets box, you can then choose Special to specify widget areas for this page.
For example, to create a new widget area that will replace Footer 1 on a single page, change the setting below Footer 1 to Special. You’ll then see a link to edit the widgets in this area.
When you’re finished, be sure to press the Update button to save the page.

Recent Posts widget and post types
The widget will silently inherit the post type setting from the page on which it is displayed. Therefore, to show the 5 most recent publications, simply add the Recent Posts widget to the Publications sidebar.
